Who is Leif Eriksson?

Leif Eriksson was born in Iceland and is the son of Erik the Red and Thjodhild. He is also one of the first Europeans to reach North America, which he did in 1002 CE. When Leif’s father was exiled from Norway in 982 CE, he sailed west with his family until they reached Baffin Island. There they found a place where it was possible to grow crops and hunt animals even during wintertime, so they stayed there for two years before returning home to Iceland. While Leif was growing up on Baffin Island, he learned how hard it can be for people to live off their own food sources if they don’t have access to natural resources like water or firewood. This knowledge would come into play later when he explored North America.

What is known about Erik the Red?

Erik the Red was born in Iceland. He came from a family of farmers, but he was exiled from Iceland for killing a man in a fight over land rights. After his exile, he went on to sail west to Vínland (now modern-day Newfoundland) and Greenland where he founded the first Norse settlement in Greenland. He was also the father of Leif Eriksson who led expeditions westward across the Atlantic Ocean and discovered North America hundreds of years before Christopher Columbus did so.

Leif Erikson is credited with being one of the first people to discover North America and has been named The Discoverer of America by some historians because he led an expedition that landed on what is today known as Newfoundland, which they called Vinland because they found wild grapes growing there when they landed there during their trip across the Atlantic Ocean.”
