Tommy Hilfiger is an American fashion designer and entrepreneur. Born in New York City in 1951, he was raised in Elmira, New York. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Europe; his father came from Germany and his mother from Poland.

Tommy studied at FIT, where he graduated with a degree in textile design after only two years of study there (the school usually takes four years). After graduating from FIT he began working for Anne Klein II as an assistant designer before starting his own company with former classmate Calvin Klein Jr., who would later go on to start his own successful fashion line along with Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta.

In 1988 he designed a line of sportswear called Tommy Jeans Co., which was sold through Macy’s department stores.

In 1992 Hilfiger introduced a new fragrance called Tommy Girl; it became an instant success thanks largely to its catchy slogan (“Do You Know Me?”). By 1993 sales had topped $1 billion, making him America’s undisputed king among clothing designers and retailers
